AM: the skin! A wonderful organ of the body. It contains the whole body, and gives containment, but above all, beauty to the human being.

Me: yes, of course. The skin, its softness, is something fantastic. We take everything so much for granted and naturalized that we rarely think about it.

AM: do you take care of your skin?

Me: not really. I’ve never stopped to think about it. I’m more of a caveman. I’ve always loved being out in the sun, and at other times, especially on vacation, I could lie like a lizard on the beach, soaking up all the sun.

AM: the sun and being in the sun is good, but a lot depends on when you do it.

Me: yes. Today it’s like that. At other times, I cared little about what they might say to me. And I loved being toasted in the sun. And that strong brown on my skin filled me with energy.

AM: although many times instead of being brown you felt like a red tomato.

Me: And then the peeling. Layers of skin would fall off because, obviously, it would peel off because of the excess of sunburn. A disaster!

AM: but, come the next year at the beach, this happened again.

Me: Most of the time. Then, I changed it and I didn’t sunbathe like that anymore.

AM: when?

Me: when a small but not insignificant area of skin cancer was discovered on my shoulder. The common one due to too much sun.

AM: and they removed it

Me: yes, it was simple and fast, although because of the place it was, right in the most stretched part of the skin, of the shoulder, it was difficult for the stitches not to give way, and it ended up looking like a stretched skin of a different color than the normal color of my skin.

AM: and do you find it a problem to see you like this?

Me: Not at all. The same thing happens to me with the scar from my colon surgery. As it was not done in the pelvis, but in the upper part, because the tumor was lodged precisely in the upper part of the large intestine, I have a nice patch on my belly, but near the ribs. And obviously it is quite imperceptible, but there it is, and I can see it very well, but it does not make me any problem.

AM: it even gives you the feeling that you take pleasure in not feeling bad about it.

Me: it’s just part of my story. Like having a lot of hair, having moles, because of the sun, on my back and shoulders. They are traits of my own.

AM: but, now that you’re older, you understand that it’s good to take care of your skin.

Me: yes, of course. I take care of the sun. I sunbathe, especially in winter and out of the critical hours. It always revitalizes me. I moisturize, I exercise, I bathe every day. I could do more these days. There are so many skin products out there, but I’m too lazy. I don’t take the time to take care of anything. I do take care of it by treating it well, the way I do.

AM: No doubt that moisturizing, cleansing, getting the necessary vitamins, exercising, helps the skin a lot. Also honoring it. Like every part of the body, because without everything you have, you would hardly be able to walk your life path, as you do.

Me: no doubt. In my meditations, I also honor every part of my body, my systems, glands, bones, my cells, and also my skin.

AM: because it is the way to honor yourself.
