Gemini – Mental – Sacral: BUILD-DESTROY

In Constructing, inhabiting, and thinking, Heidegger shows us how many times the essential words of language fall into oblivion, withdrawing their proper meaning, a concrete case is that of the word «construct». This word comes from the German Buam, it means to inhabit and means to remain, to reside. The ancient word abun refers to the way in which we men are on earth. For this reason, to be a man means to be on earth as a mortal.

On the other hand, the old word Bauen refers to the fact that man is insofar as he dwells and also means to shelter, to care for, to guard, to watch over, to cultivate (build) a farmland, or a vineyard. Through all this rich significance, it is clear that to build does not refer strictly to the technique of erecting houses, monuments, but carries a meaning close to the natural biological order of growth and maturation of fruits.

In this way, we can establish a distinction between two ways of understanding building: one would be referred to the word collere as culture, to take care and the other, to build in a technical sense or «art of erecting buildings», in this last activity would be included necessarily the inhabiting. However, for Heidegger, despite the fact that both building and dwelling – that is, being on earth for the everyday experience of human beings – have always been the «usual», the proper sense of building (namely, dwelling) has fallen into oblivion. Something decisive is hidden in building: dwelling is never thought of as a fundamental trait of human being.

The destruction of ethics today is achieved by considering it a human creation, by reducing its study to the human sciences (psychology, sociology) and by the principle that all interests (whether individual or social) are selfish. Moral experience is incompatible with this approach. Morality is part of the ontological structure of free human action. The denial of morality entails the destruction of man.

The destruction of morality takes place on at least two levels. With respect to the ordinary man, its demoralization lies in making him lose sensitivity to moral judgment and persuading him to follow immoral patterns of life. With respect to the reflective man, the history of recent ethics shows that the influential currents – pragmatism, proceduralism, etc. – have immoral underpinnings. Morality lies in man’s capacity to know the goodness or badness of his actions and to act well. At the same time that the moral sense diminishes, pseudo-morality increases. Contemporary man is continuously assaulted in his conscience so that he concentrates his moral efforts on seeking safe sexual relations, being tolerant of homosexual practices, taking care of material nature, defending animals, trying to have a healthy life, adopting attitudes of dialogue and negotiation with everyone, etc. New customs and habits that justify themselves with their backs turned to any moral consideration.

I invite everyone to read Matías’ post on the topic of the day.

Finally, I encourage everyone to reflect on the concept of the day. No one else but us can re-signify our own being
