During root growth, a large number of organic compounds called root exudates are generated. Among these compounds are mainly carbohydrates, carboxylic acids, and amino acids in different concentrations. The exudates alter the soil surrounding the roots with the continuous secretion of organic compounds and the growth of cells of the coppice, which is the organ that, like a thimble, covers another organ and which in the root is a protective case of very mucilaginous cells that protects the vegetative cone, and which ends up causing the drying of the soil.

As the soil dries out, the hydraulic conductivity decreases. When this occurs, the viscosity of the exudates increases and the resistance to movement of the soil particles in contact with the exudates increases, reaching the maximum degree of stabilization within the rhizosphere. The dynamics of aggregate formation derived from the concentration of exudates is different depending on the soil texture.

The stabilization of the soil structure around the root systems is due to two interacting effects: the increase of adhesion forces between particles and the decrease of soil wetting and drying rates. However, the degree of influence of roots on soil structure through exudates is highly variable, because the production and composition of exudates depends on: the water regime, the bacterial communities associated with exudate metabolism, soil depth, time (the highest productions have been observed in early stages of root development) and plant species.

This last characteristic is of vital importance, since the production of exudates in plants responds mainly to the architecture of the root systems, the flow and the absorption and availability of nutrients in the soil. It is known that leguminous plants (plants that explore the superficial part of the soil and that have a greater flow of nutrients as opposed to other root systems), can benefit with a greater production of exudates, however, there is a lack of research on the effect of other plant species that can increase the production of organic and inorganic cements, not only on the soil surface, but also in deeper strata that generate a better soil structure.
